A senior Shell director who resigned in the wake of the reserves crisis earlier this year is to receive a €3.8m pay-off, it emerged today.

The UK's Financial Services Authority is formally investigating oil giant Shell following the shock downgrade of its reserves earlier this year, it was announced last night.

Shell Oil has started its hostile takeover of Barret Resources in a deal that values the company at $2.2bn.
