The United Nations launched an appeal to raise almost $460m (€357m) for flood-hit Pakistan tonight.

Sectarian violence, armed militias and death squads have created a situation in Iraq where revenge attacks go unchecked, the United Nations’ top humanitarian official said in Geneva today.

Aid workers in one of history’s largest relief efforts today struggled to get food, water and medicine to survivors of the massive quake and tsunamis that the Red Cross says likely killed more than 100,000 people across Asia and Africa.

Survivors fought over packs of noodles in the quake-devastated streets of Indonesia’s Banda Aceh, while tons of aid was left stranded in the airport as government troops searched for vehicles and fuel to transport it.
