Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the US Supreme Court and a key swing vote on issues such as abortion and the death penalty, said today she is retiring.

The US Supreme Court agreed today to decide whether the constitution forbids the Bush administration from holding American citizens indefinitely and without access to lawyers or courts when they are suspected of being “enemy combatants.”
