Sergei Sokolov, the Soviet defence minister fired by the Politburo after a German teenager landed his plane on Moscow’s Red Square in the 1980s, has died.

Russian authorities have detained two suspects over the killing of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, it was claimed today, although her newspaper dismissed the report as “absolutely wrong".
