Nelson Mandela’s flag-draped coffin has been laid in state in the South African capital.

Southern leader Salva Kiir Mayardit was sworn in as Sudan’s first vice president today, replacing his former boss John Garang, who died in a helicopter crash on July 30.

Security forces restored a tense calm to the Sudanese capital of Khartoum today, a day after 36 people were killed in bloody riots sparked by the death of Sudanese vice president and former southern rebel leader John Garang.
