Researchers in South Korea have, for the first time, cloned a human embryo and extracted stem cells, marking an important step towards one day growing patients’ own replacement tissue to treat diseases.

Scientists and doctors argued publicly today over whether cloning is a sound science or an error-prone process that could produce abnormal embryos.

Genetics experts say clones that look normal may hide serious defects which make the science unsafe.
