The garda force expressed its regret at the death of John Carthy tonight and offered the sympathy of all members to his family.

THE family of John Carthy, the young man shot dead by gardaí after a siege at his home, will today learn the conclusions of the tribunal of inquiry into his death.

JOHN CARTHY who was shot dead by gardaí outside his home in Longford three years ago told a neighbour the day before the siege: “The party’s over, there will be no more laughing and the guards won’t be here anymore.”

THE first witnesses in the Abbeylara Tribunal will begin giving evidence today, as public hearings into the shooting dead of John Carthy start in Dublin.

NINE members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit have been granted full legal representation at the Abbeylara Tribunal which is to investigate the shooting dead of John Carthy by the unit almost three years ago.
