A massive explosion ripped through a Cypriot naval base today after a brush fire detonated stored gunpowder, killing 12, wounding 62 and prompting the resignations of the country’s defence minister and top military chief.

At least 10 people were feared dead after a huge explosion – thought to have been caused by a brush fire setting light to containers of gunpowder – tore through a Cypriot National Guard naval base today, the Defence Ministry said.
