A boy aged 13 has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of schoolgirl Anastasia Kriegel, who was found dead last week in a derelict house in Dublin.

A teenager avoided getting detained for a car theft after his father made an impassioned plea and told a court that his own years of drug addiction were to blame for his son’s offending.

The judge who accused Oberstown detention and education centre for troubled teenagers of incompetence yesterday said its failure to provide detailed reports on juvenile offenders to courts was unfair to the communities who had to live with the youths.

A district judge attacked the Oberstown youth detention and education centre in Dublin yesterday for incompetence and providing a report on a very troubled teenager which he dismissed as meaningless, unhelpful mush.
