King Kong, Peter Jackson’s remake about the giant ape in love, took $9.8m (€8.1m) at US box offices in its first day, solid for a mid-week debut but far below the king-size premieres of other action epics.

MATT Damon’s The Bourne Supremacy, the sequel about the amnesiac assassin he played in The Bourne Identity, racked up $53.5 million (€44m) at the weekend, double the opening for the Bourne Identity.

The Mummy Returns is a massive hit at American cinemas.
