Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has ordered the Garda Ombudsman to conduct a public interest inquiry into events surrounding the death of Shane O’Farrell, the 23-year-old man who was killed in a hit and run in 2011.

Whistleblower ‘usually ends up the victim’

The grief-stricken mother of a trainee barrister who was killed by a hit-and-run driver has welcomed the Government proposals to toughen up on penalties for drivers who flee the scene of an accident.

LUCIA O’FARRELL is distraught. Her son, Shane, has been killed and the man who took the life of the 23-year-old last week was given the choice of eight months in jail or leaving the country within 21 days.
