A classic outcome for a classic one-design boat, celebrating the 65th anniversary of one of sailing’s best known trophies, was completed off the Old Head of Kinsale yesterday when Germany’s Tommy Mueller discovered he had won the event overall in a remarkable comeback.

A finishing place anywhere inside the top 12 in today’s final race of the Brewin Dolphin Dragon Gold Cup should secure the 65-year old trophy for Britain’s Lawrie Smith, who is sailing for Glandore Harbour Sailing Club.

With just two races remaining in the Brewin Dolphin Dragon Gold Cup at Kinsale, the leaderboard remains wide open after Germany’s Tommy Mueller had his turn on the receiving end of misfortune.

More fresh to strong winds off the Old Head of Kinsale for day two of the Brewin Dolphin Dragon Gold Cup saw changes to the leaderboard of the 60-strong fleet of competitors from 16 nations.

World champions, Olympians and the next generation of sailing stars will light up the waters around Kinsale in Co Cork this summer.
