European light-heavyweight champion Joe Ward got Ireland’s campaign off to a flying start on the opening day of the final Olympic qualifiers for European male boxers in Trabzon, Turkey yesterday.

IRELAND will have five boxers in this year’s Olympic tournament in Beijing, the biggest representation since Barcelona in 1992 when Michael Carruth and Wayne McCullough won their gold and silver medals.
