Japanese prime minister Yoshihiko Noda replaced five members of his Cabinet today in a bid to win more co-operation from the opposition to raise the sales tax and rein in the country’s bulging fiscal deficit.

After leading his ruling bloc to a narrow victory in national elections, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi today said he would immediately begin following through on campaign pledges to privatise money-losing public agencies and reform the tax system.
