Last week, we heard a powerful, well-connected individual was apparently being subjected to “Kafkaesque” treatment by the State. The claim reeked of hyperbole, and lacked all credibility.

Lawyers for Alan Shatter warned Taoiseach Enda Kenny the former justice minister’s inclusion in an inquiry was "Kafkaesque", and that he had seven days to change its terms or face High Court action.

Have we now become a State that feeds on the many for the benefit of the few?
