Shares in UK oil firm BP helped to drag the London stock market into the red today after a hurricane apparently damaged one of its new rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

Crude oil futures fell for the fifth day in six, reaching the lowest in almost two months, on speculation rising US inventories and refining output will ensure heating oil supplies are adequate during the winter.
