EU policymakers yesterday unveiled plans to ensure the free flow of gas and power to every corner of the 28-member bloc, hailing it as the biggest energy shake-up for more than half a century.

German gas, electric and water utility giant E.ON said its net profit fell 22% in the second quarter as it faced weak demand for power in Europe and increased competition from subsidised renewable energy.
