ATHLETICS: Paul Robinson narrowly was narrowly outside David Matthew’s Irish 1,000m record of 2:17.58 with 2:17.93 at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava last night.

It will be a tough first day of competition for the five Irish athletes competing at the world indoor championships in Poland today but they all have their personal goals to keep them on track.

American Ashton Eaton set a new world record in winning the men’s heptathlon title at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, but the home nation celebrated the loudest with two medals today.

“Fingers crossed” was the message from Derval O’Rourke for today’s semi-finals and final as she battled through her world indoor 60m hurdles heat and a suspect starting gun as a fastest loser in 8.19 seconds at the Atakoy Stadium in Istanbul.
