A Turkish court has convicted 330 military officers – including the former air force and navy chiefs – of plotting to overthrow Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Islamic-based government in 2003.

SEVEN suspects were remanded in custody yesterday over an alleged coup plot against Turkey’s Islamist-rooted government in 2003, as part of a probe that has fanned tensions in the polarised country.

Turkish police detained 52 military commanders for allegedly planning to blow up mosques in order to trigger a military takeover and overthrow the Islamic-oriented government.
