Rob Heffernan’s final major event has seen the former world champion finish eighth in the men’s 50k walk at the World Athletics Championships in London, writes Will Downing.

No way of dressing it up, it’s been a poor championships so far for the Irish, meaning tomorrow’s race walks again represent the one remaining chance at a storybook ending.

Sixth — for many it’s a nothing position, not quite close enough to be considered unlucky, though not so far away that a medal was out of sight.
