THE editor of an independent Zimbabwe newspaper and a prominent human rights lawyer have been arrested in a crackdown on Robert Mugabe’s opponents.

The spokesman for Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader was assaulted by security forces as he tried to leave the country, a party official said.

The leader of the main opposition party was detained by police who shot dead a protester as they broke up a “Save Zimbabwe” prayer meeting in the capital today.
