NATO Secretary General George Robertson is to become deputy chairman of telecoms group Cable & Wireless from next year, it was announced today.

France Telecom, which owns UK mobile phone operator Orange, said today that it would cut 7,500 jobs in its home country this year.

Orange aims to transform itself from a mobile phone company into a "virtual personal assistant for life" as it prepares to float on the Paris and London stock exchanges.
