US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has promised federal aid to the tornado-ravaged south after he got a close-up look at the “heartbreaking” impact of twisters that killed at least 328 people.

The death toll from severe storms that roared across the US South has risen to 173, officials have said.

At least 85 people have died as storms devastated parts of the southern US.
