A UN Security Council emergency meeting on the protests in Iran showed Tehran "the world will be watching" its actions, the US ambassador has said.

The strength of protests shaking Iran was unclear on Thursday after a week of unrest that killed at least 21 people.

Iran will not scrap its nuclear programme, despite mounting international pressure from countries such as the United States, an Iranian official said today.
