Deaths linked to drug use reached a new high in 2017, with increases in cocaine fatalities and suicides contributing to the rise.

Legal drugs, including prescription medication and alcohol, account for three out of four of all deaths directly due to the effects of drugs.

The number of drug users who have died by hanging has more than doubled over the last nine years, official figures show.
