A US appeals court has upheld a judge’s approval of a multi-billion-dollar settlement between BP and lawyers for Gulf Coast businesses and residents who claim the company’s 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill cost them money.

Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the US Supreme Court and a key swing vote on issues such as abortion and the death penalty, said today she is retiring.
