The leaders of a secondary teachers’ union were urged to engage in efforts to resolve a dispute with their office staff, who are being asked to consider striking to get their employers to the table.

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has ordered a report from the State Examinations Commission on mistakes in maths and other exams over the last week.

The end of maths study for most Leaving Certificate students came yesterday and, while there was controversy over an incorrect angle in one question, teachers were pleased with the second papers in the subject.

Junior Certificate students were the first at this level, apart from those in 24 pilot schools, to be tested on Project Maths yesterday morning.

MOST of the 53,500 Leaving Certificate maths students took ordinary level Paper 1 after lunch, but Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) spokesperson Imelda Moloney said not many of those candidates would have been jumping for joy.
