Israeli forces have arrested the speaker of the Palestinian parliament, a Hamas leader, at his house, alongside a day of Israeli military operations in the southern Gaza Strip – parts of a month-long offensive against the militant Islamic group.

In a surprise ultimatum, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today said he will call a national referendum on accepting a Palestinian state alongside Israel if Hamas does not agree to the idea within 10 days.
