A High Court judge ruled that a 19-year-old man with cerebral palsy must accept a periodic settlement payment for five years even though he and his family pleaded to finish their medical negligence case with a final lump sum payment.

An 18-year-old youth with cerebral palsy who had sued for alleged negligence in relation to the circumstances of his birth in a Cork hospital was yesterday granted a further €475,000 towards his care.
