The US Army today replaced Maj Gen George Fay with a more senior general as chief investigator of the role of military intelligence in the abuse of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

US Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz yesterday defended the invasion of Iraq as an example of how the United States had to be prepared to act on “murky intelligence” in its war on terrorism.
