Laszlo Csatary, a former police officer indicted in June by Hungarian authorities for abusing Jews and contributing to their deportation to Nazi death camps during the Second World War, has died. He was 98.

Hungarian prosecutors say they have taken into custody and charged with war crimes a man suspected of taking part in the deportation of Jews in 1944.

Hungary is investigating whether a Holocaust-era war criminal has been living in the capital Budapest, as international and domestic groups clamoured for him to be placed on trial.

The number one target on a list of Nazi war criminals, known to be still alive, has been found in Hungary.
