A batch of Garda recruits has been deployed to Limerick to receive special on-the-ground training from experienced officers who have put their lives on the line to protect the city from gangland criminals.

A garda who was shot twice and left for dead on a street in New Orleans is looking forward to getting back to work and said he was hopeful of returning home in Ireland next week.

Gardaí have described the forthcoming visit of a giant grandmother to Limerick as the biggest event to be staged in Ireland this year.
