Three Englishmen who ran out of food at sea on a €300m cocaine smuggling operation were so desperate one of them began to consume the drug to stave off hunger.

A garda inspector said the investigation into three men charged in connection with the seizure of €80m worth of cocaine aboard a yacht in September is at an advance stage.
