The Ugandan government and Lord’s Resistance Army rebels today agreed to a truce to end a brutal 19-year conflict that left thousands dead, officials said.

Rebels fighting an 18-year insurgency raided a village in northern Uganda, hacking and burning to death at least 25 people, including eight children, an army spokesman said today.

Government troops backed by helicopter gunships attacked rebel bases in remote hills in northern Uganda, killing 11 insurgents.
