The contractor that operates the Mount Trenchard direct provision centre in Limerick was one of three to receive fees in excess of €5m from the State last year.

The wave of protests by residents of Ireland’s direct provision system spread to a fifth accommodation centre yesterday.

The State paid out more than €655m over 10 years to firms and individuals providing accommodation for asylum seekers.
