The forestry sector makes a significant contribution to the economy and society in general, Minister of State Tom Hayes told the National Forestry Conference in Enfield, Co Meath, yesterday.

Between 5,000 and 7,000 hectares of forest, mainly in Munster, were blown down by recent storms, according to early estimates.
