Macedonia’s conservative coalition government claimed victory in early general elections, and the opposition conceded defeat.

Macedonia’s president Boris Trajkovski was killed today when his plane crashed in a mountainous part of southern Bosnia en route to an international investment conference.

Macedonia has formed a broad Government coalition that includes representatives of the major ethnic Albanian parties, in the hope it will help the country avoid all-out war.
