SPAIN said yesterday it has launched legal proceedings against the British insurers of the Prestige, an aged oil tanker which split in two and sank off the country’s northwestern coast, raising fears of environmental catastrophe.

A TIME bomb of almost 20 million gallons of thick oil was ticking on the bed of the Atlantic last night, threatening to swamp Spanish and Portuguese coasts with one of the world's worst ecological disasters.
