Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor manufacturing division has won a contract to make new Qualcomm X60 chips using its most advanced chip-making technology.

Samsung’s quarterly profit more than halved after a global industry downturn and trade tensions hammered demand for its chips and high-end smartphones.

Samsung Electronics will invest €16.3bn in South Korea to extend its lead in memory chips and next-generation smartphone displays. This will create half a million jobs.
