Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra today offered to set up an independent committee to resolve the country’s political impasse and vowed to accept any decision it might render – including a demand for his resignation.

The Thai prime minister’s party swept a snap election boycotted by the opposition, early results today showed, though a majority of voters in most parts of the capital cast a protest ballot for no candidate.
