IRAQ was plunged into political deadlock yesterday as the dominant Shi’ites opposed efforts by President Jalal Talabani to convene parliament amid bickering over who should lead a government of national unity.

A large explosion was heard this morning in the centre of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, and witnesses said the blast was caused by a car bomb near the offices of a leading Shiite political party.
