The heaviest rains in Rio de Janeiro’s history triggered landslides that killed at least 95 people as rising water turned roads into rivers and paralysed Brazil’s second-largest city.

Rescue workers today struggled to clear the wreckage from tracks where two trains collided killing eight and injured more than 100 people a day earlier.

The façade of a hotel in the Copacabana beach district of Rio de Janeiro collapsed today, killing two and burying as many as 12 people on one of the city’s busiest avenues, the fire department said.
