Austria takes over the presidency of the European Union on Sunday, just six years after the alpine nation was slapped with EU sanctions for bringing the rightist Freedom Party into its coalition government.

CHANCELLOR Wolfgang Schuessel yesterday called for early elections to end a government crisis triggered by the resignation of four key leaders of the rightist Freedom Party, the junior partner in his coalition.
