Religious orders responsible for decades of shocking child abuse tonight defied the country’s most senior Catholic clerics, rejecting calls to reopen talks on a capped victims’ compensation scheme.

THE perpetrators of abuse against generations of children in industrial schools are unlikely to ever face prosecution, a senior solicitor said yesterday, claiming victims should not be given “false hope”.
