Pitch-side concussion tests are to be extended to 10 minutes, the International Rugby Board (IRB) announced yesterday.

The IRFU has warned parents, coaches and players of their responsibility to be extra vigilant for signs of concussion among amateur rugby players.

The IRB has applauded Brian O’Driscoll’s “maturity” for praising Ireland doctor Eanna Falvey, who prompted the player’s immediate substitution when he diagnosed his concussion against New Zealand.

Irish players are amongst those being left at increased risk of concussion-related injuries due to the failure of the PRO12, Heineken Cup and Six Nations to adopt IRB guidelines, according to a leading player advocate.
