The Naval Service’s most senior officer says his personnel are ready and willing to create history by joining anti-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa.

One of the largest military convoys ever seen in this country travelled along Cork roads yesterday as part of an exercise which will shortly see Irish troops become part of an elite EU rapid reaction force.

MORE than 400 servicemen and women will be representing Ireland on overseas missions this Christmas, the Defence Forces said yesterday.
