Tom McGonigle, a Criminal Justice Inspector, is to be the new Northern Ireland Prisoner Ombudsman.

NINE out of 10 children of criminals end up with a conviction themselves, according to research presented at a conference yesterday examining the needs of young people whose parents are sent to prison.

Prison authorities in the North destroyed 52,382 files in the months before the Freedom of Information Act was introduced.
