A significant rise in the number of allegations of child sexual abuse relating to the Catholic Church was recorded in the last year, a report by a safeguarding body reveals.

The watchdog charged with safeguarding children in the Catholic Church received 242 new allegations last year, including one of alleged abuse.

There has been a slight increase in the number of allegations of abuse being reported to the National Board for the Safeguarding of Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland.
