HISTORIAN Kieran McCarthy could be shaping Cork city’s future if he is, as predicted, in the final shake-up for the extra new seat in the city’s largest ward.

Once a peninsula of green fields and country estates, Mahon in Cork has in recent decades developed into a sprawling suburb of mixed residential housing, a rapid transformation which along with other social factors resulted in it becoming an area of high unemployment.

CORK developer Owen O’Callaghan has denied he ever had any role in having the route of the tunnel under the River Lee moved to facilitate the development of a shopping centre in Mahon.
