The major highway bridge linking Seattle with Canada and the rest of the Pacific Northwest region collapsed, dumping vehicles and people into a river.

One student was shot dead in a high-school hallway in Tacoma, Washington, USA, as classes were starting this morning, and police arrested another student found wandering in a neighbourhood a few miles away, officials said.
